-The top 10 most trainable dogs list contains 2 dogs that are often used on ranches. If you own a very trainable dog and their breed didn’t make the list, don’t be offended. This top 10 is a general listing according to their characteristics as a breed. Their are exceptional dogs in every breed.
I currently own two of the breeds that made the top 10. We use the Border Collie, and his offspring, for cattle work. My Yorkie didn’t make the list and it’s no surprise. I still love him.
The German Shepherd is our home guard dog. She is more than that. Bella anticipates my balance and hearing problems, She will rush to my side when the need arrives.
According to Inside Dogs World here is a list of the Top 10 most trainable dogs. This list varies only slightly amongst the dog communities.
The Border Collie is always ranked as the most intelligent dog. They will often anticipate your needs. They are also very loving and caring creatures who quickly find the way into your heart! High activity and attention are traits they have inherited in order to intimidate and gather livestock! They also have good speed and stamina.

The Poodle is not just a has a reputation as a “girls” dog because of their most common grooming look! But this dog didn’t make the top 10 most trainable dogs list because of their looks. These dogs are water retrievers, hunting dogs and highly intelligent and obedient – therefore, very easy to train!
- German Shepherd
The movie star and the workaholic dog, the German Shepherd is a very smart and brave dog! it This dog breed are commonly referred to as “police officers”!
In my experience with German Shepherds, I have owned several, are great guard dogs and are extremely loyal.
- Golden Retriever
With the softest dog-mouth and smart brains, these dogs are great service dogs and companions. The Golden Retriever is naturally well-behaved.
“The Sheltie” is a herding dog and like their relation, the Border Collie, their desire to please never fades. They are always focused to work which makes training very easy. They look like a miniature “Lassie”.
- Labrador Retriever
The Labrador Retriever is easy to love. They are fun, loving and energetic and they learn very fast! You do not have to be a great trainer when working with a “Lab”. Many people that have owned and raised Labs tell me you must consider them puppies for at least 2 years.
- Papillon
Delicate, trademark ears that flow like butterfly wings make them adorable pets! The Papillon reflect a self-assured personality and they are lovely companions to travel with! Their IQ is believed to be equivalent to that of the Border Collie! Their size makes them a great pet in smaller spaces. I will admit I didn’t expect this breed to make the top 10 most trainable dog list. Who knew?
- Doberman Pinscher
Their looks are intimidating as well as misleading, as they are very loving, intelligent, strong and loyal dogs! Very easy to train as the Dobermans are usually at the top of the obedience class!
